How to pay your council tax
You can set up or amend a direct debit using our online form.
Alternatively call us on 0300 1234 171 to set up a direct debit over the telephone. You'll need your council tax reference number and bank details to hand.
Payments can be spread over 10 or 12 months and you can choose a payment date of either 1st, 7th, 15th or 20th of each month. We will notify you in advance of any change to the amount and you can easily cancel at any time.
Please note that once you have set up a direct debit you do not need to take any further action in relation to your direct debit when you receive your annual council tax bill, unless you owe council tax for other years and have not already made an arrangement for payment.
Payment over 12 months
You can use this online form to request instalments over 12 months for your current year council tax bill. You will be asked to provide your council tax account number and an email address. Please note if you ask us to change your instalments after 1st April for a financial year, your instalments will be extended to March but there will be less than 12.
The Direct Debit Guarantee
This guarantee is offered by all Banks and Building Societies that take part in the Direct Debit Scheme. The efficiency and security of the scheme is monitored and protected by your own Bank/Building Society.
If the amounts to be paid or the payment date changes, Cornwall Council will notify you 10 working days in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed.
If an error is made by Cornwall Council or your Bank/Building Society, you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund from your branch of the amount paid.
You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by contacting Cornwall Council on 0300 1234 171, or sending an email to email@example.com, or by contacting your Bank/Building Society who will in turn inform Cornwall Council of your cancellation.
You can make payments online using a debit or credit card. You'll also need your council tax account number handy.
Report a missing payment
Use this online form to tell us about a missing payment. You will be asked to provide your council tax account number and an email address. You will be asked to provide the date of the payment, amount, details of where you made the payment and method. You will be asked to confirm whether you have a receipt.
Self Service allows you to manage and view your council tax account. You can use Self Service to:
- View full details of your account
- See how your charges are worked out
- Check your discounts and allowances
- See when your payments are due
- View bills and letters we send to you (paperless e-billing)
- Set up a Direct Debit or make a payment
- Notify the Council you are moving

Other ways to pay
Call us on 0300 1234 200 to make a payment. You'll need your council tax account number and payment card details.
You'll need to take your council tax bill with you to the Post Office. Payments made at the Post Office may take several days to reach us.
Make cheques and postal money orders payable to Cornwall Council. Please write your account reference on the back and send it to the Revenues section at the address on the front of your bill.
A receipt will only be issued if you send a stamped addressed envelope with your payment.
Please do not send bank notes and/or coins by post.

If we have agreed a payment arrangement with you and you are paying council tax for more than one bill, or on more than one account, it is very important that you pay the exact amount due for each bill or account at the correct time. If you do not follow the agreed payment schedule your payments may not be allocated to the correct debt on time, which could result in further recovery action and possible additional costs.
